Independent Living Options

Independent living, congregate housing, or retirement communities are a few of the names that describe housing providers for older adults. They do not need much assistance but want to live in a safe, secure place. This type of housing option can offer a variety of apartment amenities including emergency pull cords, hand rails in the bathrooms, spacious living areas and full kitchens.

Independent living options frequently include meal programs, transportation, housekeeping, scheduled activities, beauty /barber shop, exercise room, and faith based services. Independent living settings for seniors include condominiums, cooperatives, market-rate apartment rentals, and subsidized apartment rentals.

Condominiums and Cooperatives
Senior condominiums are usually apartment or townhouse housing complexes. Condominiums are owned by the person living in the unit. They share ownership of the common areas with other residents in the community. Cooperatives are another type of senior housing that offers ownership in the residential unit by purchasing "shares" from the company.

Market-rate Apartments
This solution is simply an apartment rental to an individual. The monthly rent levels in market-rate apartments are determined by supply and demand in the local real estate market and community. The monthly apartment rent is paid by the tenant with no assistance available by government agencies.

Subsidized Apartments
Subsidized apartment buildings help serve low and moderate income seniors. The rent for this type of housing is determined based on an individuals income and assets and is regulated by federal and/or local housing programs.
