Housing with Services Options

Housing with Services solutions include a variety of residential settings for older adults. They provide a place to live and can orchestrate supportive services. For a fee, these facilities may offer services such as help with personal laundry, social services, arranging for medical services and/or transportation to those services. These residences also provide a range of heath-related services such as assistance with personal care, nursing, and home care. Residents living in a housing with services setting have an agreement with the housing provider that defines the specific services provided and the cost of these services.

The types of apartments vary from an apartment with a kitchen to a room with a shared bathroom. Meal options provided to residents also vary between settings. Housing with Services scenarios include, but are not limited to, residential care homes, assisted living, memory or dementia care, and adult foster care settings.

Residential Care Homes
Residential care homes have a small number of older adults living together and sharing a home. Seniors needing assistance might feel more comfortable in a smaller, more personalized setting. Residents receive meals, support, supervision and assistance with personal care, on an as needed basis.

Assisted Living
Assisted living is a community for older adults that offers living arrangements where a variety of health-related and personal care services are available to its residents. These services include daily meals, laundry, personal care assistance, medication reminders, 24 hour staffing and more. Seniors living in an assisted living generally pay a monthly rental rate in addition to a monthly fee for the personalized services they require. Other amenities in assisted living include social activities, scheduled transportation, exercise programs, and an emergency call system.

Memory Care / Dementia Care Memory or dementia care programs are similar to other housing with services programs except these facilities specialize and are designed for memory impaired seniors who need a safe and secure environment. Memory care communities provide continuous supervision, assist with personal care needs, and provide activity programming all geared toward keeping their residents mentally stimulated. The staff in these facilities are specially trained to care for Alzheimer's and dementia residents.

Adult Foster Care
Adult foster homes are small homes that usually serve no more than 5 older adults living in one house. Families may provide adult foster care services in their own home or organizations may provide services around-the-clock in these homes.
